The Simpsons Hit and Run is an absolute classic, but could it be considered to be better than any Grand Theft Auto game? Here are some reasons why we think that might be the case.

The Nostalgia

The Simpsons Hit and Run is considered an all-time great partly because it provides such a great nostalgia trip for a lot of us.

If you’re looking for some happy teary-eyed memories, boot up Simpsons Hit and Run and you’ll be transported to the past. To a better time where your only worry was sneaking in a few more minutes of gameplay without your parents noticing.

Simpsons Style Storytelling

The world of The Simpsons was so perfectly captured in the Simpsons Hit and Run. The gameplay features voice acting from the real Simpsons cast and includes the kinds of scenarios and gameplay moments you could only expect to see in an episode of the Simpsons.

For many people, the Simpsons TV show was a childhood classic, so being able to play as each member of the Simpsons family and see iconic Simpsons characters out in the world was pretty amazing.

You Can Play It In Front of Kids

It doesn’t matter if you were able to get away with playing Duke Nukem Land of the Babes as a kid, some families are different. If you’d rather your kid didn’t see you senselessly beating people whilst shouting profanities in GTA, then the Simpsons is a perfect daytime alternative.

You Can Play It With Kids

To add onto the statement made above, the Simpsons Hit and Run is a great kid-friendly game that you could actually play with your kids. The game controls are fairly easy to get used to and there’s far less pressure from AI or NPCs whilst causing havoc in the streets.

The Sense Of Progression

In The Simpsons Hit and Run, you had to progress through the game to unlock new maps and gain access to new characters. Each map was themed differently and forced you to play a different Simpsons character. This method of gameplay beats out the sense of progression you get from playing any GTA game.

Open world is great, but blending open world with a progressive level system like The Simpsons Hit and Run manages to capture the benefits of each option. I’d love to see a similar system introduced in new games. I think it’s the best way of doing it – it keeps the sense of progression alive whilst giving players that open world immersive feeling.

The Character Costumes

In GTA, you’re given the option to dress your characters the way you want to. There are so many options that you’re a little spoilt for choice. This can be great, but unlocking or buying new clothing items doesn’t seem very rewarding.

The Simpsons Hit And Run didn’t have clothing options like GTA does, but instead had a number of character costumes that could be unlocked on each level. Once again, this style of doing things made unlocking new costumes so much more satisfying.

It seemed like the further you progressed through the game, the wackier the costumes would get too. All of the costumes were also based on episodes of the Simpsons TV show, which made checking out the costumes in the next level even more interesting.

One of my favorite costumes in the Simpsons Hit and Run was the Donut. It was a costume that turned Homer’s head into a donut with a bite chunk taken out of it. It could be unlocked on level 7 and paid homage to the Treehouse of Horror IV.

During that episode, Homer’s head was turned into a donut and he found it incredibly difficult not to eat his own head. The Simpsons Hit and Run costume features a number of quotes that reference that episode in some way.

Exploration

This is a difficult one because Rockstar always does a great job with their open world GTA maps. However, I feel like the exploration in The Simpsons Hit and Run was a tad better than GTA. There were so many more easter eggs and collectibles to be found throughout the different levels in The Simpsons Hit and Run.

Each time I reached a new level in Hit and Run, I was always wondering what extra content and secret areas could be found. A lot of the easter eggs and secret content also paid homage to the TV series. The developers of The Simpsons Hit and Run did such a good job at filling the world with gags and nods to the original TV show.

An example of the scale of exploration in The Simpsons Hit and Run would be the included 49 collector’s cards spread throughout the game. If you found all 49, you’d be able to gain access to a weird 3D episode of Itchy and Scratchy.

It’s Relaxing

Playing The Simpsons Hit and Run is just so relaxing. Playing it now feels like a walk in the park, and at times I kind of enjoy that about it. The gameplay is still enjoyable today, but it’s not stressful or frustratingly difficult. You can complete the game in your own time, explore the world and just spend some time to chill out as everything goes on around you.

GTA, on the other hand, can be a little full on at times. GTA Online is constantly putting you in harms way of other players and always encourages you to get involved with the next activity. Single player in all GTA games restricts you by putting cops on you each time you cause too much carnage. Hit and Run does the same, but the cops are woefully inadequate, just like they are in the TV series.

It just seems like The Simpsons Hit and Run is always fun, whilst GTA can be frustratingly difficult at times.

Summary

What are your thoughts on The Simpsons Hit and Run? Do you think it’s fair to say that in some ways the game is better than any other GTA game? There’s no denying that Hit and Run satisfies some gaming itches that GTA games will never be able to do.

I’m not saying the GTA games aren’t great, either. But in some ways, GTA will never be able to beat the iconic masterpiece that is The Simpsons Hit and Run.
